A Man After God’s Own Heart
Junior Level

In the bible, David is one of the most beloved people of all time, The bible says He was a man after God's own heart.  I started thinking about that.  How can I be a person after God's own heart?  Why was David?  We know he was an amazing man but he was not perfect, He committed adultery, had the woman's husband murdered, he had many women, he did not always discipline his children well, when Tamar was raped by her half brother, David did nothing. He had faith in God but there were times when he did not.  In 1 Samuel 21:12-13 he pretended to be a mad man when he was in fear for his life. Yet in all these things...let’s read what God says about him.

Handout:  A Man After God’s Own Heart

1 Kings 15:5 "David did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite."

What?! All that other stuff, God didn't even mention...why?

2 Samuel 12:13 "And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die."

David was a man of confession, He confessed his sins, he did not try to blame others or make excuses, he would just confess it and ask God to forgive him.

Acts 13:22 tells exactly why David was a man after God's own heart.  It says this,
and when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.

He will do all my will.  David was a man after God's own heart, not because he was perfect, he wasn't, not because he did not have a past, he did, but because he was obedient, and because he would confess his sins to God and ask for forgiveness.  Also, he had a pure heart. David realized that anything good about him was because of God and God alone.

David wrote this...Psalm 16:2 "Oh my soul, you have said to the LORD, "You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You."

I don’t know why it was on my heart to share this with you, but know that God sees your heart and when we go to him humbly every single day he will make us new no matter how we have failed or what we have done. Once he has forgiven us, that is gone! God remembers it no more, even if the devil wants to bring up your past failures and mistakes, They are washed away by the blood of Jesus and you are clean from it as though it never happened! If God has forgiven us then we must forgive ourselves, to keep looking back and regretting is to say that we don’t really believe we are forgiven.

There are people who will try to throw the past up to us, but God will deal with them as well. God is interested in what He can make us, not what we use to be or what we have done in the past! Once we are forgiven, and made amends the best way we know how, it’s over. God is really reminding me a lot of that lately.

Dear Righteous, Heavenly Father…

Thank You that You judge us differently than we judge others and ourselves.  Thank You for looking at the heart of human beings instead of outward appearances.  We praise You that we can be people after Your own heart.  Father we ask that You draw us closer and closer to Yourself and help us to always live in integrity and follow Your ways.  Help us to know that anything good about us is You and You alone.  Help us to know and believe that our battles are not ours but Yours to fight.  Help us to love You as You deserve to be loved and to praise You as You deserve to be praised and worshiped.  I will ever love You always in Jesus lovely name I pray…Amen.
