The War of Gog and Magog (Lesson 1)

Today we will begin the study of a great war prophecy in the book of Ezekiel.  It is one of the greatest wars that will ever be.  A war that will seem to defeat the Israel, but God will protect them in the end and they will be saved.  I pray that in this lesson we will see how GOD is truly always in control and that we do not have to be afraid of things to come because it is all part of His plan.  When it is all said and done, He will rule and rein forever!  Praise His name!  Praise JESUS!

Handout:  The War of Gog and Magog

In the book of Ezekiel, this man of God writes down a prophecy that a New Coalition of Nations will form against the nation of Israel.  We are not certain the exact time it will take place, but the scriptures do tell us what nations will form this union.  Ezekiel foretold that this Coalition will come together to try to destroy Israel but that God would save them.

Before we study the actual Gog and Magog war, we must first learn some history about Israel and how this conflict has risen over many years.

Now Ezekiel was a Priest who had been taken into Babylonian captivity and one day down by a river, God sent a vision to him of things to come, in fact the entire book of Ezekiel are prophesies from GOD that he wrote down.

The book of Ezekiel can be divided into 4 parts:

  1. Ezekiel Chapters 1-24 foretells of Israel’s captivity and the reasons for it
  2. Ezekiel Chapters 25-32 foretells of judgment upon the nations that have come against Israel.
  3. Ezekiel Chapters 33-39 foretell of Israel in the last days before the return of Jesus Christ, The Messiah.
  4. Ezekiel Chapters 40-48 foretell of The Millennial Temple and the reign of Jesus Christ, The Messiah during the Thousand Year Reign.

In Ezekiel chapter 37 we read about a Valley of Dry Bones that Ezekiel saw in a vision.  There were all sorts of bones lying around leg bones, and arm bones and shoulder bones, skulls and GOD asked Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?”  To which Ezekiel replies, Only You know LORD.  It is then that in the vision Ezekiel sees the bones being to move and shake and they come together as they should be to form men and then flesh came upon the bones and skin.  Then God told Ezekiel to prophesy to the wind and he did and the wind gave these bodies breathe and they stood forming a great army.

Ezekiel 37:11-22 “ 11Then He said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,  14And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.  15The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,

16Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and for all the house of Israel his companions:

17And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. 18And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?
19Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.  20And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.

21And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:

22And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.”

If we take a look back some years ago, this prophecy is a picture of the Holocaust.  These people were murdered and beaten and tortured and starved and they were scattered from the land into many different parts of the world.  If we look at the pictures of some of the survivors of the Holocaust they were starved and just skin over bone and people were amazed that they were even walking around yet they survived.  So many of them were murdered however we see now that God spared some and has brought them and is still bringing them back into the land that HE promised them and that is now called Israel just as He said.  They are no longer divided up into tribes as they once were.  They are the nation of Israel.

Now in Ezekiel 35 and  36 it speaks of a prophesy of Mount Seir.  Now I have heard different commentaries on this and an in depth study of these places have shown that the area of Edom is where Mount Seir is located.  The people of Edom or the Edomites were the descendants of Esau.  We know that Esau and Jacob had a conflict over his birthright and that started some animosity of what is today called the Arab people and the Jewish people.  Today, the people who call themselves the Palestinians, who now live in Israel today in what is called The West Bank or The Gaza Strip.  Those people, be they Arab Christians or a Muslim who call themselves Palestinian, are people who lived in Israel prior to 1948 before Israel became a nation.  Those people are the descendants of Esau, or they would be classified Mount Seir today.  Now if you read Ezekiel 35 and 36 you see that someone from Mount Seir, or The Edomites will try to split Israel and make two nations of it, but we know that is not God’s plan.  This conflict is not new, it goes back to Jacob and Esau. (Genesis 25:26-34 and chapter 27)

Ezekiel 35:5 “Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end:”

Ezekiel 35:10 “10Because thou hast said, These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess it; whereas the LORD was there:”

What they are saying is here is a nation called Israel but we are going to divide it into two parts and they can have one part and we will have the other.   Then they say these two nations will be ours…in other words after we get what we want, we will also go after their part and have it as well.

Ezekiel 36:1-2 “Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession:”

International Bible Teacher and Preacher Perry Stone says this: The ancient high places according to the Biblical term, are the areas that were known as Judah and Samaria.  It is now known as The West Bank.  The West Bank is a very controversial place today.  Israel annexed it in right after the war of 1967, it used to be the country of Jordan.  The Jordan River became the dividing line between the country of Jordan or Ancient Mount Seir, and the country of Israel and the West Bank is the controversial area.  That is the territory is what they are fighting for.  They are fighting for Gaza and The West Bank.  This is the area where this battle of Gog and Magog will happen, and it is started over the conflict of ancient Judah and Samaria.

Now that we have a brief history of this prophesy we will stop here and finish our study next week LORD willing.  We will begin to study the actual prophecy of the war of Gog and Magog and see how God will rescue His people Israel.
