The View From The Mountaintop

This nugget will be very different from all the others. In this nugget there will be quite a bit of liberality taken with the scriptures as to literalness. It is my intent to bring out points that may cause you to reflect on what these men suffered for their prize and provoke meditation on these scriptures.

Junior Level

Intro:

Our Sunday school topic for today focuses on suffering which our Bible heroes endured for their reward.

Handout: The View from the Mountaintop

outline:

  1. Ask the students - Has anyone in your family ever suffered?
  2. Ask the students - When they suffered, what was there which could bring them any king of relief or happiness.
  3. With the class, try to build the character of a person who is suffering greatly.
  4. Now ask the class what kinds of rewards would bring this person happiness.
  5. What does the Bible say?
  6. Tell the stories of Moses and other Bible heroes, showing how they suffered for God.
  7. Challenge students to serve those who are suffering today.
  8. Prayer

activity:

Draw a picture of the cross. Explain the pain that Jesus endured there.
Show how this can relate to our own periods of suffering.

discussion:

Friend, is it worth the wait and journey to you? Look what Moses suffered through 40 years. Look what Jesus suffered at the hands of the Jews. Look what John suffered on the Isle of Patmos. Are you willing to undergo the trials
and possible suffering for the prize that awaits those who endure?

prayer:

Bible:
Psalm 87:1 His foundation is in the holy mountains.

Isaiah 40: 11 He shall feed his flock like a Shepherd:
he shall gather the lambs with his arm,
and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those
that are with young.
